(Semi) Automatic Party

We all know the local political scene is a vibrant and active thing right across the spectrum of philosophical belief. Cudos then to the Asheville TEAPAC, who have designed themselves a fundraiser and social event so special even the Huffington Post took notice.

In light of recent events across the country, one might be tempted to think such an event a tasteless, politically and socially poisonous thing. But you would be thinking of a different demographic if you did. I wonder which of our local Republican candidates will be showing up to this event? That will be interesting.

  1. Too bad we can’t get them to take Moffitt’s little threat seriously and let them post that for the nation to see.

  2. Dixiegirlz says:

There’s a comedy skit in here somewhere. Something about little wienies needing to drag out the heavy artillery, to make em feel semi manly.

  3. Tom Sullivan says:

That’s about a 500% markup on 7.62×39 and 5.56. Those are monopoly prices, free marketeers.

  4. shadmarsh says:

Freedom isn’t free Tom. Also, there is pizza!

  5. TJ says:

I keep telling y’all…every time I get an email from the Tea Party, from the “comedy show” I attended this past year, there is ALWAYS a section about gun shows, etc. It’s like they are advertising for the gun manufacturers, and, then there’s there beloved candidate taking pride in telling folks they better arm themselves and take to the streets, receiving heavy applause.

::::sshivverr:::: (and, it’s not the weather)

  6. Tim Peck says:

    “That’s about a 500% markup”

    Um, it’s a fundraiser. (sheesh)

  7. Tom Sullivan says:

    Um, it’s a joke. (sheesh)

  8. Objectivists do not believe in humor. They merely believe in conveniently changing their entire philosophy when asked by the GOP.

  9. Tim Peck says:

Here are the certifiable nutjobs you need to worry about:
Suspect charged in shooting at Family Research Council headquarters
“The Virginia man accused of shooting a security guard at the headquarters of a conservative lobbying group after saying, “I don’t like your policies” carried a backpack that contained extra bullets and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches, authorities said Thursday.”,0,4735644.story
“Imagine a volunteer for the Family Research Council marching into some gay group’s headquarters with a gun, and after shouting his opposition to the homosexual agenda, opened fire and wounded a guard before being subdued. Never mind evening news. This would be breaking news! and for days there would be seemingly endless coverage of continued conservative hatred. These networks are aiding and abetting liberal violence by refusing to identify it as liberal violence. Whether it’s vandalism at Chick-fil-A or rapes in Occupy Wall Street camps, these networks simply cannot find “news” in liberal violence of any kind.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center identifies Family Research Council as a so-called “Hate Group.”

And maintains a profile page on the group:

    SPLC background

National Field Marshal for the New Black Panthers King Samir Shabazz who was caught on video tape allegedly intimidating voters in Philadelphia in 08 is now in charge of the New Black Panthers plan to create inner city militaries that would go into nurseries and kill white babies and murder white people n the street.”

  10. shadmarsh says:

I see someone peed in Sue’s Cornflakes again.

  11. Tim Peck says:

“After news broke Wednesday of the New Black Panthers calling for the killing of white babies, more shocking audio from the group’s radio program has now surfaced.”

  12. Ascend of Asheville says:

Oh dear! Panic in the streets!

  13. Huh. Tim’s also being paid by the Glenn Beck machine? Fascinating.

You see, SueTwo, that’s what I was referring to.

Time was Tim was, IIRC, talking about “non-partisan” stuff and saying he was above the fray by being a Randian Objectivist….

Lately, though, he’s been absolutely sticking to a script provided for him.

He still cannot actually have a debate though. Probably because his information is spurious and his ideology is reprehensible.

  14. RHS says:

“Yep, that sounds like a solid democratic agenda to me!”

Pretty rich coming from somebody who just recently accused Holly Jones of being
“a member of a progressive political clique in Asheville that demands ideological purity and leaves no room for differing views within the democratic party.”

Something about a pot and a kettle springs to mind here.

  15. Catherine says:

Also, marketing-wise, let’s talk a little about that poster. Are those…credit card fees? It’s rather tacky to post two different prices. Why not just eat that cost? Oh, wait, you can’t because you spent all your budget on…pizza.

    Good luck!

  16. Tom Sullivan says:

The Southern Poverty Law Center identifies Family Research Council as a so-called “Hate Group.”

Huh? They’ve got company: New Black Panther Party,

  17. Davyne Dial says:

So it’s hate group vs. hate group? Let’s send them all to their own hate filled island.

  18. TJ says:

It seems Tim is relishing the posting of those headlines. Maybe you could add yellow or read, with a fancier font as you find pleasure in showing what we already know: there are extremists who exploit power hunger and incite hate and immensely enjoy the attention they desperately seek in order to affirm their own existence.

Does it affirm yours to bring our attention to those?

  19. Gordon Smith says:

My concern is how tone deaf the fundraisers are to the timing of their event. We’ve had mass shootings lately, and I’m concerned that this sort of activity glamorizes these weapons. I think it’s disrespectful to the victims of Aurora and Oak Creek. They’re free to do it, and I don’t think it indicates anything other than a willingness to ignore the national context in order to raise some money.

Does throwing a fundraiser featuring people paying to fire high powered machine guns glamorize violence? If so, why do it?

  20. TJ says:

Because it’s their mindset. It’s a badge of honor, a rite of passage. Without it, for many, their identity is incomplete.

I find it striking the way their minds work: “guns don’t kill, people do,”

Odd. I don’t recall any news items about guns carrying around people, who fire deadly rounds into a crowd. Maybe THAT’S my problem:lack of imagination.

Poor guns. We need to get them rights, along with those corporations, Oh, yeah, they already have representatives. Well, we better save those enslaved folks who shoot for them. At least get them that living wage.

Or, recognize the blindness and denial, which allows these folks to rant about “liberal violence,” while they serve tea at the gun show promoted in their political mailings to my email inbox. It used to be kind of entertaining. Now, it’s just annoying and frightening,

“these networks simply cannot find “news” in liberal violence of any kind.”

Maybe, it’s because many of the “right” wing nutjobs to which you refer are too busy creating their own brand of insanity with their Tea Party sponsored gun event inspirations.

  21. Tom Sullivan says:

Will there be women in bikinis?
    With machine guns?
Blowing the living s%#t out of toilets?

  22. TJ says:

Sounds like a perfect script for “Myth Busters.”

    Republican/Tea Part style

  23. TJ says:

    This is under the heading:
