Asheville City Council Live Chat for 07/27/2010
By
July has been full of fun, fireworks, frolic, festivals, and festivities.
But now it’s back to business. Come join your friends and fellow local-government wonks for this evening’s LiveChat session – which is simulcast across three websites: Ahevegas, AshevilleNow, and ScrutinyHooligans.
Council’s agenda and supporting documentation can be found here. Those of you new to ACC-LiveChat, be sure to review the guildelines and instructions. (Especially if you’re wondering why comments may take a few minutes to show up.)
You can find the online video live-stream and chat-box after the jump. (Chat starts after 5pm. You won’t see a “start” button in the chat box until 5pm.)

What did the council decide on the handicapped issue? Limited parking time, so there couldn’t be squatters, (I hope)?

Dixie,
We decided to consult with the Mayor’s Task Force for Persons with Disabilities before proceeding. Representative of downtown interests made a very strong case for treating metered spaces as temporary places to park rather than for vehicle storage.
We will revisit the issue in August.

Understood Gordon.
My husband is disabled and we do utilize the handicapped designated spaces downtown. Frankly there are not nearly enough. We only recently (thanks to John Bowles) came to understand that handicapped could park in any space. It’s never occurred to him to park for days on end.
I’d think a marking system would suffice in identifying the abusers. Don’t know if it’s done here, but elsewhere the meter maid makes a tire and two hours later when the mm rolls around again, anyone whose overshot the time limit for parking gets a ticket.
