Cheers, Asheville!
By
For the second year in a row, Asheville has captured the highly-coveted “Beer City USA” crown. Started by The Charlotte Examiner’s Charlie Papazian last year, the online poll produced 7,389 votes for Asheville compared with a mere 6,565 for the second-place winner, Portland.
On Papazian’s website, he says “While Portland, Oregon organized a healthy challenge against the western North Carolina city of Asheville, in the end the relentless craft beer enthusiasm for Asheville won out.”
Barley’s Taproom will hold a special 5:30 pm toast tonight marking the win. All local pints will be only $3.

Here’s a photo gallery of last night’s Barley’s Taproom celebration from the Asheville Citizen-Times.

I’ve noticed local beers really are good. How good? I don’t drink much Guinness any more. I drink Asheville beers. That’s GOOD. (Tho I sometimes go for cheap warm-weather bellywash, because different weather calls for different brews; so in hot weather I tend to go for Tecate or PBR).

I agree with you, Tom. Aside from Guinness, I never drank much beer until I came to Asheville. Now I’m a vertiable
drunkconnoisseur. The Wedge brews are all excellent, as are all of the offerings from Highland, Green Man and French Broad (the 13 Rebels ESB is lovely). I’ve been drinking a lot of Craggie’s Antebellum Ale of late too, which has flavors of ginger, molasses and spruce — surprisingly light and refreshing.
I’m getting thirsty…

Shiva. That’s all I have to say about local beer.

I’m not much for the IPA. Tastes like bong water to me.

I like it hoppy. But not too hoppy, which is probably why I’m not really a fan of the Portland brews. They use hops in the same way an insecure man would use a sports car, SUV, or truck.

Or a great big gun.
