ATTENTION PROGRESSIVES: Despite constant concessions, the bill passed with neither Shuler’s support or a single GOP vote.
Please consider this next time you start a war with appeasement or insist on voting for Shuler because he’s “not as bad as a Republican”.
In many ways he’s much, much, worse.
Thank you.

Former respected populist now Obama/Democrat party suck-up previously said: http://rawstory.com/2009/2009/10/kucinich-health-reform-legislation-a-bailout-insurance-companies/ at least Shuler was consistent in his beliefs.

What is to be done about Shuler? We would have gotten the same vote with Mr. Taylor in office but at least Mr. Taylor would not have been firing on the people who voted for him.
I’m serious… Mr. Sullivan? Mr. Buckner? Want to start putting something together now so we can run somebody we really like in 2012?

Just called the DC office and the local office. The Washington person was nice and accommodating. The local lady, not so much.

I watched the votes late last night and wondered which Democrats waited until the bills and motions passed before casting their useless votes. The last vote passed with something around maybe 8-12 Democrats yet to vote, and most of them voted nay. I guess they were allowed to go ahead and vote nay by the Democrat party leaders. Anyway, I’m just wondering WHEN Shuler voted. I’m guessing he voted after the bill passed. I’m re-naming him Senator Shuseless

Dave, to give Heath Shuler the benefit of the doubt, I would be willing to hope that leadership gave him a pass. When I talked to the bitter, frustrated, mean and impatient local Shuler rep at the local office today, her only response was that he represents the whole district and that he had determined that his constituents were “overwhelmingly” against HCR. So if leadership was convinced of this, they might have given him a pass so he could defend in November against a “socialist, commie, pinko” attack by Republicans.
Which of course begs the question: If leadership actually needed him, would he have come around?

Randall, you are a kind man.
So…. if his constituents were overwhelmingly for shutting down public education, or closing public libraries, or converting state highways into toll roads, or demanding only for-profit hospitals….? What? He would vote according to his constituents wishes? I reckon that would depend on who scared him the most. I just can’t be generous toward this guy. I don’t hate him, I just sort of wish he would disappear back into whatever dark recess he was in before some idiot decided to fund him for the 11th District’s house race.

Ivy, I don’t suggest he is a leader. And I must admit that lately I’ve been thinking of him as more of a rich, corrupt politician who only follows his masters’ bidding and whatever directions come out of nefarious, secret meetings with candle light and Gregorian chants in one of the dark chambers at C-Street.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Ivy. But didn’t you know? I wasn’t born here. It’s disqualifying. Okay, I’ve lived around these parts longer than our congressman has been alive, but that doesn’t count. It’s sorta like being from Hawaii.

Well, Randall, I guess we are sort of on the same page – except for your innate kindness and the fact that I personally sort of like Gregorian chants and candle light.

Mr. Sullivan,
Gads! We’ve tried the “locals” for decades and that doesn’t work. If something doesn’t work, I thought you were supposed to try something different!

Heath Shuler is a psychic. He announced the day before the vote he was voting no, actually Friday evening. He already knew they wouldn’t need his vote.
And Brainshrub, I was once cynical and jaded like you. The Transylvania Dem party convinced me it didn’t matter how Shuler voted, if he was a family member, he has a D beside his name.

Randall,
I guess my question is, is he really representing his district by choosing the Stupak language over the Nelson language on abortion? Especially when Stupak himself seems okay with the deal he got?

Let us not forget Chainsaw Charlie, who it took a LONG time and a number of challengers to get rid of.
Shuler was the only one with enough money, name recognition, and support of the national party to effectively dump Taylor. Sure, he’s not the ideal person whom most of the readers of this blog would like to have representing them, but that is why we have elections. He’s had his shot; let’s try someone else next time. If it’s good enough for the Iraqis, it should be good enough for District 11!

Doug, I don’t think it was over specific abortion language. Big Biz, insurance companies and other monied interests simply own him.

My question was for the staffer more than you, randall. I’m just fascinated by the rationalizations Shuler and his staff like to offer.
