Shiny Happy People
BySo I’m going through some of my old junk the other day and I realized that I had taken a bunch of pictures from Downtown After 5 that I had never done anything with — and I figured it would be nice to share them with everyone here on Scrutiny Hooligans.
Councilman Gordon Smith said it best at a recent City Council meeting: Asheville’s like a big family — a dysfunctional family sometimes, to be sure — but a family nonetheless. He’s proud of that, I’m proud of that…I think we’re all proud of that. It’s one of the things that makes our little city such a great place to live, don’t ya think?
Click on the picture below and you can navigate through all 267 pictures in the gallery. I hope you enjoy them.

Great pics Michael. Looks like I need to open up a sunglasses stand.

That’s the whitest bunch of people I’ve ever seen.
Maybe 4 black men and zero black women.
I’ve lived in Asheville and been to many Friday After 5s
You’ve got a problem.

Billy,
Thank you for the comment. I thought the same thing.
When I shoot things like Downtown After 5 — or anything, really, where there are big crowds of people — I always look for different types of folks to add a little visual spice. Apparently, I couldn’t find the groups in question or they didn’t turn out (it was some time ago, so I don’t specifically remember).
This sounds strange, I know — but it’s true. It raises very interesting questions as to how diverse we really are as community: I remember when I first moved to Asheville it struck me right away as being the most racially segregated city I had ever lived in. Blacks and whites just don’t seem to regularly mix here, it seemed to me.
