Rocks You Can Reason With
ByAvant Gardener and Asheville Citizen-Times Letters to the Editor wrangler, Dave Russell, does his swan song in today’s paper. (Did I Quisinart those metaphors enough for ya?)
While working this job, I have been told — on the same day — that I was a “homophobe,†and one of my neighbors told me I was “in bed with the gays.†In the same week, I’ve been told I was anti-Semitic and so pro-Israel that “it’s not possible for (me) to be fair about the current situation in Palestine.†I’ve been called “anti-God†and “just another born-again (Christian).†And so on.
Could it be that I was just a guy working hard to get as many diverse opinions in the paper as possible? Naaaah ….
Dave is headed to RiverLink, work more closely tied to rocks and water — easier to reason with than LTE writers.
Dave, the AC-T’s loss is RiverLink’s gain.

Dave will be missed at the paper. He did a splendid job of balancing the different sides of the wingnut pantheon in the LTE section, and I always found his columns interesting and entertaining.
But as the picture above illustrates, Dave’s true love is the stacking of rocks into some of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring designs around. I heartily recommend his blog/website. He takes some pretty nice photos, too!

Daves true love is the river – he love sthe rocks because they are like jewelry for his real love – the river – and of course his number one love is Ann and his great kids!

ACT stopped publishing my letters and instaletters. Mountain Express still does. What I found annoying (and rude) was when I wrote an op-ed, and then called about it, but I was never told they weren’t going to use it. Seems to me that all letters and instaletters should be published unless they advocate violence or have profanity. And it also seems to me that for longer pieces, the writer should be told if they are going to publish it or not.

He will be sorely missed. But hurray for RiverLink!
