Tune In, Turn On, Chat Up

By

Liveblogging Asheville City CouncilJoin us at 5pm for a few fun-filled hours of real-time observation, policy discussion, and uncensored snark as we liveblog tonight’s Asheville City Council meeting; the agenda and all the supporting documentation can be found right here. And for the complete multimedia experience, be sure to turn on your teevee to Charter Cable Channel 11.

Your City Council will be talking Annual Financial Report, Downtown Master Plan, Energy Independence Initiative, Boards & Commissions, Roadside Solicitation (what does $20 buy you these days?) and various other juicy bits. Will Cecil Bothwell object when Mayor Bellamy gives the invocation? Will Jan Davis be sporting his sexy new spectacles? Will Esther Manheimer manage to crack a smile? Will Bill Russell regale us with stories from his latest Caribbean cruise? Will Gordon Smith finally get a fresh haircut? For the answers to these and other spicy questions, tune in tonight at 5.

Your host for the evening, as always, is the inimitable Paul Van Heden. He’s pretty easy-going — all he asks is that you abide by our Comments Policy. It’s his show and he has complete discretion as to who stays and who goes. I should mention that Councilman Smith has absolutely NO control (editorial or otherwise) over this liveblogging event. Any observations, opinions, humor, etc. are solely the responsibility of the person making them.

We hope you’ll join us in our little experiment in participatory democracy. Seeya tonight!

If you’re attending the meeting in the flesh, don’t forget that there is now wireless internet access in Council chamber.

Good point, Councilman Smith — we would sure appreciate a live perspective from the floor. By the way, any progress on getting these meetings streamed live on the innerweb for those folks who don’t own a teevee?

Here’s the update on live streaming from Lauren Bradley:

“IT Services is looking into 2 options for moving this forward – one of which involves an outside vendor, and the other would involve us making some internal upgrades. At this point, I believe we will come up with a feasible option and should have a plan in the next 30 days or less.”

On another IT front, Ms. Bradley reports:

“We are weeks away from launching a social media plan. As you know, we are restructuring staff in the community relations division so we can put more focus on all electronic forms of communication including the Web site. We are planning on supplementing internal staff resources to establish a presence and generate good quality content through contracted resources.”

Will Barry flog the dead horse in the flesh, or flog the virtual dead horse?

Most of the time it’s hard for me to get excited about City Council meetings but I am looking forward to this one. Thank you guys for the work you are doing to involve the pubic with what is happening inside the Council Chambers.
