What Day Is It? Open Thread.

By

If you’ve been maxing the holidays like I have, then you’re aware of that strange feeling of not knowing for sure what day it is.  I’m having fun tonight, but tomorrow’s a workday.  It must be Sunday.  No, I worked today, and I’m having fun.  It must be Friday.  No, Friday is snowstorm Christmas New Year’s Eve.  It must be some other day.

Your thread.  Tell Old Man 2009 what you think of him.  Baby’s on its way.

Dear 2009:

False hope is worse than none at all! Now go sit next to 1980 and think about what you did wrong.

Josh Marshall ponders the inies and outies of airport security. Americans are okay with a host of intrusive/invasive/extrajudiacial violations of privacy and personal dignity in the name of fighting terrorism, up until the point of letting TSA screeners see outlines of our naughty bits.

I still think 1984 was a worse year (if well-named), but the decade was worse than the eighties, which managed to better its reputation in the last 60 days.

Hey Baby – if you’re arriving on an airliner, prepare to be frisked.

Thanks a lot, 2009. I had hoped the last full calendar year before my 50th birthday would be full of romance and excitement, but all I can remember along those lines is almost being run over by a soccer mom in the Harris Teeter parking lot. And it wasn’t even a close enough call for her to get out of her minivan, she just mouthed “I’m sorry!” *sigh*

Congratulations again, Gordon, and good luck in your new position. Asheville is lucky to have you, my friend. :)

Was she cute?

That’s the stuff of a Disclaimer “missed connections” spoof.

You: nearly ended my life in the parking lot at Ingles. Me: the guy in the Carhartt overalls and the size 13 Timberlands with the car treads on the steel toes. I think you mouthed “I’m sorry,” but maybe it was something else. Let’s clarify things over coffee, maybe take things further.

Yeah, she was pretty cute. I went out of my way to shop there like every other day for two weeks in the hopes of seeing her again, until I realized I had 3 gallons of milk and 5 packs of angel hair pasta waiting to be consumed. I had to let her go.

After 20 years out West, I’m back in my home state, having arrived on Halloween night. We lucked into a reasonable rental house in south Asheville, and I am working a temp job at Biltmore Estate in the Bake Shop. It’s not much yet, but its a start in a new life on the East coast where I realize my heart has always been.

2009 was a year to focus on the big picture. Get even more inclusive and to demand less polarized framing of important issues. We are in fact all in this together. Here is to a great 2010 where we trust and respect each other more.
