Homecoming Job Fair Tomorrow
ByFrom the Asheville Chamber’s website:
The Economic Development Coalition and the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce partner annually with numerous workforce and industry allies to promote employment opportunities in advanced manufacturing, health care, and other growth industries in Western North Carolina. Residents, students, graduates, former residents, and friends and family visiting over the holidays are encouraged to attend this one-stop opportunity to meet directly with representatives from companies who are hiring, will be hiring in 2010, or who would like to have a presence to promote awareness of their company to potential future employees..
Tuesday December 29, 2009
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Biltmore Square Mall, Brevard Road, Asheville
The Citizen-Times promoted the event on Sunday, explaining,
Last year, an estimated 2,000 people came out for the Homecoming Job Fair, backing up traffic on Interstate 26 and crowding a space intended to accommodate less than half that number.
Organizers have expanded space in the mall by about three times this year to make room for more than 60 employers, who will interview and take resumes from potential hires from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
This year there are 62 booths, and only seven manufacturers by my count (there were 11 last year), and not all of those are hiring.
Good luck to all job seekers.

I’ve gone to a few of these. Although Job Fairs are necessary, they’re so unpleasant – mainly because most of the employers are there to exploit desprite people, rather that find productive employees.
Quick cases in point:
Aflac: You will be required to pay for your own training.
J.Crew: Famous for high turnover & low pay.
Asheville Radio Group: Guessing a commission-only job.
Alliance Tractor-Trailer Training Center: I used to work for these people. AVOID THEM!!! http://tinyurl.com/yebhqne (These complaints represent a tiny fraction of the people this company screws. Frankly, I’m amazed they’re allowed to stay in business.)
To end on a more positive note:
City of Asheville: Best. Employer. Ever! God I miss COA. If my business fails, I’ll try to take anything with the city.

The crowd today looked much smaller than last year, even with higher unemployment and better advertising. No backup on I-26. Cold may have been a factor. Few real jobs; lots of the usual service jobs and temp agencies. Few manufacturers. Among those not there this year: Jacob Holm, Volvo (obviously), Elkamet, Plasticard Locktech, Silver-Line Plastics, Raflatac, Arvato digital services (formerly Sonopress).
A friend observes that there seem to be more ads on Asheville’s Craigs List for 3rd and 4th roommates as the recession drags on. Here’s one for a 5th roommate.
Happy New Year.

arvato wasn’t there because they exclusively hire their rank-and-file through four different temp agencies, and only one of them is actually placing people there. I think the only thing they’re hiring for is hand-packaging these days anyway. Knowing what I know about the manager of that department, I wouldn’t wish a job there on my worst enemy. Ya’ll can do better.
