Since 1998 the Landscaping Crew has been working with the USDA Forest Service growing native grasses and flowers in an effort to make these plants available for the use in restoration projects along the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Southern Appalachian Forests. The Forest Service has provided the Landscaping Crew with the seeds that have been collected over the past four years. The seeds have been planted, grown and researched by students. The plants were sold to the forest service and planted at sites that will serve as collection beds, making seeds available and accessible in the future. On campus there are plans to use the native grasses and flowers grown by the Landscaping Crew in low traffic areas that are currently being mowed. The goals of this plan are to eliminate pollution of mowers and to provide an environment that creates wildlife habitat and improves aesthetic beauty.
