I got to sign some proclamations today.  I don’t often get to proclaim.

Now that the vote has been officially certified does anybody know how many of the write in votes were specifically for Robin Cape? The BOE web site still is only showing them as write in votes.

Mtn. X has the dets:

In last week’s election, Asheville City Council member Robin Cape received 4,478 write-in votes, according to figures from the Board of Elections. While Cape’s bid for a second term was serious, many of the other write-in votes were not (Squirt the Wonder Clam, really?).

Hillcrest Fire Relief. I don’t think I’ve seen anything here about the Hillcrest fire. One of my co-workers lives at Hillcrest. I asked her what folks could do to help people who were displaced by (and lost their homes and everything in them) in the fire. At first she suggested that I give to the local Red Cross. (www.redcrosswnc.org) However, yesterday she said that residents had held a meeting and there is someone at the Hillcrest office that is organizing collecting support for the displaced families. I’m working on getting in touch with that person and will post info here. Does anyone else have information about Hillcrest fire relief?

Jonathan,

I received this yesterday in my email:

Good afternoon Council members,
I wanted to update you on the help provided to the families involved in the Hillcrest fire earlier this week.

• The Red Cross has financially assisted 24 people in 11 families.

• We provided hotel rooms and food vouchers for the 6 families who were evacuated from Bldg. 21 for one night and then allowed home.

• We provided hotel rooms for three nights for the 5 families who lost their homes in Bldg. 20. We also provided them cash cards for clothing, food, shoes, winter coats and medicines.

We are glad to be able to help Ashevillians in times of emergency. Please let me know if there are any other needs the families have.

Have a great weekend,

Patrick Fitzsimmons
Director, Red Cross

The giving spirit of Asheville never fails to inspire.

This is cool too: A dozen and a half of Asheville’s homeless population will be traveling to Mississippi tomorrow morning to help post-Katrina reconstruction efforts as part of a service project — they’ll be driven down by volunteers from Trinity Episcopal, and they’ll be gone for a week.

Wish them well and keep them in your thoughts.

The cover pic of Sarah Palin’s book reminds me of the movie poster for The 40 Year Old Virgin.
