Another Voting Sunrise Breaks the Horizon
ByTime to vote!
Voters will begin today to make their final choices for Asheville City Council. There’s new drama to the race with the addition of Ryan Croft to the ballot. Mr. Croft, head of Asheville’s 9/12 organization, will join Dr. Mumpower and J. Neal Jackson to form a bona fide Republican slate. They’ve been endorsed by the Republican Party of Buncombe County, and their musketeery presence on the ballot will likely encourage greater Republican turnout.
So if you’d like to keep Asheville moving in a progressive direction, you’ll have to show up and vote your values. You can vote at the downtown Board of Election, 189 College St., from 8am to 6pm.
Who’s voting early?

Ah, how vote-buying has fallen. Used to be, you’d line up at Bill Stanley’s place (now Pack Tavern) for your shot of whiskey & $10. Now all you get is a lousy cupcake…
I’m just kidding. Vote Cecil!
oh, and Vote Gordon!

How is it Asheville’s progressives are back having to solve the “four candidates” problem again – with a full slate of three Republicans?
And while I understand that there was some talk among progressive candidates before the election that the person who did worst in the primary would drop out, we’re now in a position where one of the leftish candidates didn’t even run in the primary.
Really, it’s no surprise that Carl Mumpower has stopped bothering with campaigning and fundraising. Not only can he count on conservatives voting for him and him alone, he can count on progressives splitting their vote every time.

And we can’t pretend that conservatives won’t take advantage of this – they already are. Tim Peck has been pushing Robin Cape’s write-in with glee for weeks. He knows exactly what this will lead to.

If nobody else wants to say it, I will. Either Esther or Robin should drop out. Otherwise, it’s four more years of the good Doctor.

I love Robin. I think she has done a great job. I feel really bad about the life situations that lead to her decision to not file to run for re-election. Had she been on the ballot I would have supported her. However she is not. Therefore I am supporting the 3 candidates that I can live with, work with, and think can win. I want to block the doc. So I am going to vote for Manheimer, Bothwell, and Smith. I think it would be wise for Robin to let it go already. She can come back in two years and sail to victory.

Bryan,
Well, dropping out is one road. For myself, I’m not so worried about Carl Mumpower being back on council, though obviously I’d prefer he weren’t.
So – I don’t know – maybe Cecil and Gordon could systematically say really nice things about each other, a la Jan Davis and his Republican allies, and their supporters could do the same. This might guarantee that we replace Robin and Holly (= Kelly Miller) with good folks at the very least.
Or maybe PARC or some other organization could choose a slate of three and pay the money necessary to make their recommendations known. I don’t know if that would work – the experiences of DFA and Match Our Mountains don’t augur all that well – but it’s worth a shot, and hopefully PARC is already working on it.

bryan – i’ve always had you pegged as a complete poseur, but you’re going to have to explain how someone who has referred to himself as a “progressive” on many occasions can reconcile those core beliefs and values with supporting someone like esther mannheimer.
and no, your explanation will not sway my opinion that you’re a complete poseur – or a douchebag, for that matter. this will be more for the benefit of any potential voter who a) reads this blog, and b) actually believes that you’re still relevant.

Arratik…Interesting. You have peaked my curiosity. Who are you anyway and why are you afraid to use your real name? Do you have self-esteem issues? Does trying to knock me down make you feel better about your unfulfilled life?
I find it very interesting that some people hold to the belief that they are the true judge of who is “progressive”.
