Shuler Draws a 2010 Challenger

By

WLOS:

News13 has learned that Hendersonville Mayor Greg Newman will enter the race for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional district.

Mayor Newman, a republican, was elected in 2005, and his term ends in December. He previously announced he would not seek a second term.

Well, the NRCC managed to get someone, but they would have had a much stronger candidate in Charles Thomas.

I’m interested in Michael Muller’s take on this.

My understanding is that Thomas and Shuler are friends. Thomas is very smart. I suspect that he will wait until 2012 when it is an open seat.

Thomas’ simply is not nearly conservative enough for the Republican party of today.

Why will this seat be open in 2012?

Someone’s gotta do it…

NEWMAN!

I don’t think Charles Thomas could survive a primary fight. He generated a lot of bad blood over his reaction to fuel shortages after Hurricane Ike, which several people commented on at a recent Health Care Rally I attended.

I don’t think Newman is the man from what I’ve heard about him, but I would love to have my impression proven wrong. (I have not heard him speak or read anything from him, so I am relying on the word of others in Henderson County).

A campaign by Shadmarsh could be exciting, as long as he put more effort into it than that Libertarian Party guy did last time around.

Bottom Line, the seat is Shuler’s as long as he wants it, especially if we keep putting idiots up against him.

I understand that Mayor Newman is also a trial lawyer. It thought they were high on the list of the things Republicans bristle and shudder about.

Doug,

Greg is young, smart, friendly, charismatic…and a good dresser. Basically, he’s nothing like the usual cast of characters in the GOP.

Hope you’re well.

There’s also an eye surgeon from Murphy named Dr. Dan
Eichenbaum who has publicly spoke of running. Personally, I think he’ll flake out – if he hasn’t already – but who knows.

As far as Newman goes, he totally screwed up traffic patterns on Main St. Hendersonville with some traffic light vs. stop sign experiment. Cost the city a bunch of money. Henderson county is completely ruled by the whims of the elderly. Which means lots of churches, police, and doctors. Even if he does nail down the churches, there will be “RINO” charges from somebody in Henderson. Even Mumpower pulled 30% of Henderson… I also tend to think that Campbell was a stronger candidate then Newman will be. Of course, that’s just Henderson County…

Either way, there will be other candidates even if the NRCC gave Newman their blessing via Steve Duncan. Maybe some candidate will come forth and save us from boredom…

Bryan- I ask you as a fellow GeoDuck, why is the seat going to be open in 2012?

Ralph,

But are you a good dresser?

And why is the seat going to be open in 2012?

Doug…It is my belief that Shuler will be running for Governor in 2012. I do not think that Bev will seek re-election.

You know something we don’t know?

John…just speculation based on poll numbers and who is staffing the NCDP.

Unless you’ve actually got poll numbers on Shuler for governor, as opposed Bev Perdue’s chances, I’d say it’s a long shot. He might be a decent governor, and he’s doing better with his public speeches these days, but I still think it would be tough for him to run without being better-known in Charlotte, the Triad, and the Triangle.

Oh, and in a primary, his vote on the stimulus (and possibly his upcoming vote on health care reform) would not go over well.

Doug…Looking at Bev’s poll numbers as of Oct 6th I think that she will not run for re-election, nor receive enough support to defend against a primary challenger. I have not heard or seen anything that would indicate that Shuler is looking at 2012 for NC Gov. That being said, I would not doubt that it is being looked at by his people and the NCDP.

If Shuler starts doing fundraisers for state-level Democrats anywhere east of Marion, I’ll think again.

I just found out Shuler is a member of The Family. Whoever runs against him for any office gets my vote. Maybe I ought to get out more.
