I recommend using a snake. I had a pesky clog a few years ago & no chemical or plunger-type remedy would help it. You can rent a snake at most tool rental places like I did from Asheville Rental. They’re kind of a mess to use, but when you’re done, you know your clog won’t just ease up temporarily & then come back.

I picked up one of these things at Lowe’s a few months ago, and it worked wonders for our bathroom sink. It’ll probably splash nasty backflushed goop all over you and the kitchen in the process, but it’ll work. The only chemicals involved were the ones that went into the plastic.

I am in dubious battle with my kitchen sink. Starting last Sunday night, the thing stopped accepting unlimited water and food scraps. It backs up and then takes twenty minutes or so to drain away. I thought it was in perfect health. I had no indication that a clog was forming. To address this, I have been using a product called “Drain Care”. This is one of those with natural enzymes and bacteria, no harsh chemicals. I’ve used this product before with success but in situations like these, it can require a lot of patience. So far, with two treatments daily, I’ve seen the flow rate of the drain increase ever so slightly.

It is difficult to live without a kitchen sink or with at least a partially functioning one. I have been able to manually wash about five to ten dishes at a time before it backs up all the way. It has become a game. How little water can I use per glass, dish, or spoon? What is the proper balance of eating out, using disposable dishware, or just economizing on normal dishware? But it also prompts questions on a deeper level. How have my regular dishwashing habits contributed to this situation? Isn’t my disposal kind of a joke and shouldn’t I just use a filter on the drain? Since I’m trying to create an ecological environment to solve the problem, is it going to fail because I’ve been using chlorine based detergent in the washing machine for so long? Assuming this clog clears, perhaps I should stop using those products. Finally, what would happen if garbage generally stopped getting picked up? How much do I waste of any resource and how much attention is paid to keeping the “pipes” clean?
