Make Them Do The Right Thing
By
Western North Carolina Alliance:
Industry representatives have significantly stepped up their efforts to weaken federal legislation (American Clean Energy and Security Act- H.R. 2454) to combat climate change – and it’s time for us to step it up even more. We are quickly running out of time to make sure that Congress passes bold clean energy and climate legislation.
You can make this bill stronger by calling your Representative this week. Rep. Heath Shuler’s phone number is 202-225-6401. Rep. Virginia Foxx’s phone number is 202-225-2071. If you are unsure who your representative is, use this system, which makes calling as easy as sending an email:

Be sure to urge your Rep to strengthen H.R. 2454 by:
* Cutting carbon emissions by at least 25% by 2020 – currently HR 2454 has been weakened to only cut 18% of emissions by 2020 (from 1990 levels).
* Improving the requirements for renewable energy considerably. Because of utility exemptions and opt-out provisions, renewable energy generation required under this proposal may be lower than what will already be accomplished through existing state requirements.
* Auctioning pollution credits for the public good, not polluter profits. Valuable pollution credits are currently slated to be given for free to oil and coal companies, rather than the benefits going directly to the American consumer or invested in a clean energy transition.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is on board with efforts to derail climate change legislation:
“For the Chamber, the decision to kick off its campaign also has strategic value. Some of the group’s members, including Johnson & Johnson, have objected to the Chamber’s opposition to climate-change legislation designed to lower emissions of greenhouse gases. Focusing on a broad defense of the private sector is ‘a way to separate this debate from an individual legislative battle,’ Mr. Donohue said.”

I’ve sent a note to a local chamber exec of my acquaintance asking his position on this matter.

Thanks for putting this up there, Gordon. It is key for progress to happen at the UN Copenhagen Climate Negotiations this December. For that, it is key for the US to send the world some sign of interest in a strong deal–passing this bill.
It isn’t as strong as I’d like, but it’s important to pass, and then later surpass, this bill.
Everyone: please call Shuler today.

Cecil,
Are you asking about climate change at the same time you’re asking about health care? Because I’d love to know Kelly Miller’s position on EFCA.

Yale e360 has an article up in which they ask experts whether the ACES bill is “a good start or a non starter.” Check it out.
