Friday Open Thread: Budgets
ByHow many of you write your budget down? Monthly? Weekly? How do you do it?
The city is looking at its budget and seeing a $1.8 million dollar shortfall next fiscal year.
The nation is passing a budget that is economic light years away from our everyday experiences. Heath Shuler voted for it yesterday. None of the Republicans voted for it. Twenty Democrats joined them.
While Washington uses deficit spending to steer the ship of state away from an economic waterfall, cities and individuals don’t have the aggressive option of incurring enormous debt.
We’ve got to figure out how to make it work with what we’ve got.

Downtown gallery stroll starts back up tonight
“The downtown art walk is 5-8 p.m. today. Participating galleries will have gallery guides that include a map. Many galleries offer light refreshments during the walk; some may have live music.”

“In the first independent analysis, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office concluded that President Obama’s budget would rack up massive deficits even after the economy recovers, forcing the nation to borrow nearly $9.3 trillion over the next decade.”

I agree. Public hearings ought to take place when working people can attend.

“massive borrowing over the next decade, leaving the nation mired far deeper in debt” – WaPo, 3/21/09
But how “massive”? How “mired”?

funny how now it seems the same “liberals” which previously were against supporting Corporate America have now decided to support “bailouts” and “stimulus plans” which do exactly that!
also funny how the same “conservatives” which supported the previous tyrant’s administration’s corporate bailouts are now suddenly against the new tyrant’s similar actions!
gee, how long does it take people in this country to realize we are living under a tyrannical government, where there is no longer ANY concern for the rule of law, government accountability, nor even basic economics?
Amerika has certainly become the world’s laughing stock for sure run into the ground by We the Sheeple!

Lots of people are working through the evening– restaurant and bar workers, retail workers, and 2nd shift workers to name a few.
Too often, people believe that “work” ends at 5:00. It’s understandable. If you and your friends are all professionals, then it becomes part of your mindset that evenings and weekends are work-free.
I believe that folks who start work before 8 AM or finish work after 5 PM are the hardest workers of all.

Good point, ATW. When would you hold public hearings, so the most people could attend?
By the way – I generally work from 10am – 8pm on my workdays.

Imagine if public hangings, (on the unfinished Pack Park Public Plaza) were as common as public hearings. I wonder which would draw a greater turnout.
