Come out to support Burton St. residents and celebrate with them on the Re-Opening of their Community Center.
A couple of fun facts for you to remember:
Councilman Kelly Miller stands with the Chamber of Commerce in their endorsement of I-26 Connector Alternative 3. When Asheville City Council voted to endorse Alternative 4B in October, 2008, only Carl Mumpower voted against it.
Commissioners Peterson, Bailey, and Stanley voted for Alternative 3 but claimed they wanted to save Burton St. Maybe they’ll show up tonight to tell the residents their plans to preserve their homes and neighborhood.

Gordon,
I hope that you are going to hear what folks have to say. This community center is a big deal to folks over there. I remember when we put up the money to fix the place up. Heart only goes so far. In middle and lower income neighborhoods the community centers and the programs they house are the front line in the struggle for kids choosing between crime and honest living. To me our community centers are the highest priority. If we can not do right by kids then we suck.

The event was SRO with folks craning their necks in from the hallway trying to catch a glimpse of the speakers.
What an energized, hopeful community we’ve got in Burton St. Mayor Bellamy, Councilman Davis, Commissioner Jones, and, to his credit, Council Kelly Miller were all in attendance. There were kudos and dedications and song and prayer and food and laughter.

Cool…glad there was such a show of community support, official and otherwise.
Bodes well, I’d think. And thanks for the update.

I remember when I drove a cab in this town 10 years ago, and ended up ferrying douchebags trowling for crack through this area. (btw, driving for a living when your new to the asheville area, bad idea/bad comedy).
It’s absurdly tragic that just when the neighborhood is turning itself around, it faces distruction.
When I moved here, Asheville felt like it was meant for the people that lived here. Dosent feel that way anymore does it? Feels like if we cant service the rich tourists then we’re in the way.
