Friday Open Thread: Unplugging

By

The plan had been to go to Virginia. My brother-in-law’s family has a homey cabin on a jazillion acres, three ATVs, and two quarts of Popcorn Sutton’s Apple Pie Shine. Alas, alack, their young’un is down with pneumonia, and now I’m scrambling for Plan B. My Star City Harbinger friend is looking into getting us into his parents’ cabin in north Georgia, or Mrs. Hooligan and I may head to Charleston to stay with Pedal on her boat. No matter the direction, we’re getting out of town, turning off the cellphones, and tuning in to things other than the everyday.

Y’all have a great weekend. It’s going to be beautiful.

See what happened when we defeated the Diesel Power Plant that was going to be put in Woodfin? Remember that John Carroll warned us all of rolling blackouts if we didn’t get the thing built ASAP.

AC-T: “The demand for energy hasn’t lessened, said Robert Sipes, Progress Energy vice president for the western region. But with new legislation requiring the state’s utilities to ramp up electricity generated from solar, wind, and other renewable sources over the next decade, Progress isn’t planning any new fossil-fuel plants in the area in the near future.

“The need is just as real as it was two years ago, but you’re not going to hear about any new (fossil-fuel) plant until we see what we can achieve through energy efficiency programs and renewable energy,” Sipes said Thursday at a forum for community leaders.

But the utility does plan to plug into the sun, negotiating a contract to build a solar plant in the Asheville area, which will use photovoltaic panels to generate up to a megawatt of electricity, or enough power for about 1,000 private homes.”

I was just in Virginia this past weekend, doing this: Virginia Creeper Trail video. We go at least once or twice a year. Highly recommended — much more fun than following politics.

He’s BACK! One of the greatest presidential candidate comebacks in ALL of history!!!

“Pat Paulsen knew where he stood.

“I am neither left wing nor right wing,” said the deadpan comic and “Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” editorialist during his quixotic run for the presidency in 1968. “I am middle-of-the-bird.” ”

By the way, the Smothers Brothers are playing WCU soon… I think I’m going!

As to Paulsen, we had him lined up to play in a movie I wrote in the early 80s that, alas, did not get made.

I’m leaving tomorrow for a sojourn to Sunset Beach, North Carolina. There I will drink tequila, make love to my woman and work on this sunburn I started at the Obama rally last week. Don’t worry, though, I will be sporadically updating my blog while I’m gone.

Take it easy everyone. Don’t let the fascists get you down.

Oy.

My plans fell through. I’m not unplugged after all.

I’m volunteering (well, tips accepted) at the WNC Nature Center’s annual Hey Day on Saturday from noon till two. Then I’m heading downtown to street perform in the late afternoon and evening. The weather’s supposed to be lovely, they’ll be plenty of folks downtown, the leaves are exploding, the stock market is crashing, and we’re having an election.

In times of crisis, people need a good laugh and since I only ask for a dollar for my performance, not $700 billion, I think I have a shot at a pretty good night.

My day’s agenda – grab some caffeine, pay a couple of bills, fill a few prescriptions, go see Religulous, do some laundry, work on some tuneage for an upcoming cassette release (yes, you read that right).

Life is bitchin’.

Cassettes are not dead, at least not in this town.

Huge afternoon and evening downtown. There were so many people, that when the light would change, 20-30 people would cross all day long. Had two great shows at the Nature Center to start the day. What a town!
