North Carolina – Swing State

By Gordon Smith

Political Wire:

A new Civitas Institute poll finds Sen. Barack Obama has pulled even with Sen. John McCain in North Carolina, 45% to 45%.

Key finding: Obama has reversed McCain’s recent lead among unaffiliated voters and now leads 45% to 40%.

Said pollster Francis De Luca: “Senator Obama has caught John McCain in the polls in North Carolina. A state that was once thought to be solidly in McCain’s camp has become a toss-up according to this month’s poll.”

Civitas is, of course, that big gang of ideological conservatives. PPP came out with a poll yesterday showing a tie, and Rasmussen has it close. Numbers in parentheses are the results of the previous poll. And neither of these include polling done after the $700 billion bailout scheme was rolled out. The economic events of the week could well leave Obama with a slim lead in this state.

PPP (PDF). 9/17-19 results. Likely voters. MoE 3% (9/9 results)

McCain (R) 46 (48)
Obama (D) 46 (44)

Rasmussen. 9/18. Likely voters. MoE 4.5% (8/13 results)

McCain (R) 50 (50)
Obama (D) 47 (44)

Yeah! Keep going Obama! I would love to see Liddy defeated and NC go blue this year.

Off-topic- something just occurred to me that I hadn’t heard yet on the many blogs around (not that it’s too brilliant):
What if Karl Rove advised Bush to put a clause in the bailout that Paulson would have to have total power to implement it without court review.

That way, when it got stalled in Congress, Bush could blame the Democrats.

First Time Obama’s Been Ahead In An NC Poll:

A new Rasmussen survey finds Sen. Barack Obama holding a two-point advantage over Sen. John McCain in the traditionally Republican state of North Carolina, 49% to 47%.

This is the first time in eight Rasmussen polls that Obama has held any kind of a lead in North Carolina, though the candidates were tied once as well.
