Parkside: Flippant Coleman Lies About Opposition
By
After ducking City Council in his hell-bent effort to build his condominiums on public park land, Stewart Coleman said this in the AC-T:
“I think that City Council is political, and unfortunately this town listens to the noisy 80 people that jump around and dance around trees and do foolish stuff,” he said.”
Who is Stewart Coleman referring to?
Pack Square Conservancy, who opposes the building because it violates the Pack Guidelines for building on the park?
David Gantt, Nathan Ramsey, Bill Stanley, and Carol Peterson who have all called the sale a mistake?
Old-timers from Shindig On The Green who have been under that magnolia for a hundred years?
The Downtown Association, who voted unanimously to oppose it?
A certain middle class blogger who really would look foolish if he danced around a tree?
Republican candidate for County Commission Don Yelton?
Asheville’s Chapter of Democracy For America?
Former Democratic candidate for County Commission Cecil Bothwell?
Half of the Planning and Zoning Committee?
Nope. Stewart Coleman, who looks down his nose at all of the above, is referring to a year-old protest led by the effervescent Lady Passion. He insults this group then asks the citizens of Asheville to believe that the Wiccans are standing alone in their opposition to building a condo highrise on our public parkland.
At what point will people stop treating Mr. Coleman as a reliable source? He told the Planning and Zoning Committee that he couldn’t take even one floor off his building without rendering it prohibitively unprofitable. Then he chopped two floors off to dodge the public and City Council. He altered the PSC view corridor drawings. He repeatedly said that the County hadn’t offered him a buyback deal on the land even though Commissioner Gantt and Chairman Ramsey made it explicitly clear that Wanda Greene had offered about $1.5 million and that Coleman countered with $4.1 million.
While it’s ultimately the County Commission’s responsibility to get our parkland back, Stewart Coleman’s contempt for the citizens and institutions of Asheville is breathtaking. Truth has become a casualty of Coleman’s strongarm efforts to force his Parkside condominiums onto our park.

What a dick. Taking a cue from FOX News – label anyone opposed to HIS business as anti-business and flighty.
I bet if it was put to a vote, much more than 80 people would vote NO. In fact, I bet 90% of this town would vote no.
It should be put to a vote … oh wait …

Agree 100% with you.
Coleman is attempting to frame this issue into a “Hippies” vs “Local Business” contest.
Personaly, I have no problem with a condo being built on the land. It’s a rather attractive building.
However, Coleman does not have a right to build the structure on land that was not meant to be his – acquired using unuderhanded means.

If Stewart Coleman really believes that only “80 people that jump around and dance around trees” are opposed to his Parkside Condominium project, he’s living in Wonderland with Alice and the Cheshire Cat. At the County Democratic Convention in April, a resolution strongly condemning the project was unanimously approved by delegates from every Buncombe County precinct.

Gordon,
Did you receive a response to your email to Commisioner Gantt yet?
Just curious?

What are you talking about, and why do you think I have greater access than you do? Write him an email yourself, or write Wanda Greene. I can’t be your secretary, yo.
Empower yourself, Tigerswede.

Gordon,
I’m talking about this email that you posted a few days ago, I’ve copied it below. Don’t you want to share your answer with us? Did you not get an answer? Just be open and honest about it.
Commissioner Gantt,
I understood that the County Commissioners had decided not to address the Parkside issue again until after the June 10th City Council meeting. Now that Mr. Coleman has pulled his plans for that Level 3 Review, what steps will the County take to reacquire the land?
I understand after talking with County Manager Greene today that the County is having the Park resurveyed, and I got the impression that Mrs. Greene wasn’t prepared to confirm that the land in Coleman’s possession was, in fact, part of the park.
What is the County’s position on whether this was parkland? What is the County plan for reacquisition?
Thanks for your time and attention,
Gordon Smith

No, I haven’t heard anything. Trust that I’ll pass it along as I know it. I’m a believer in transparency – unlike the players in this drama.
