I saw Night Ranger at the Asheville Civic Center.
The date was July 4, 1984.
I remember the experience well. There was a family holiday cookout that afternoon.
“(You Can Still) Rock in America” was a song on their most recent release, which sent the crowd into a patriotic frenzy. “Sister Christian” was not yet a single. The band had never had a radio hit.
Tony Carey was the opening act.
I was sixteen years old. I loved it.
PS The Civic Center had a Third World vibe back in 1984, also.

I was at that Night Ranger concert, but it wasn’t my first one.
My first concert was (am I really about to admit this in print?!?) – The Osmonds. I can’t remember the date but it was at Carowinds in Charlotte and I still have the program.

My dad took me to see the Beach Boys and Willie Nelson at the SC state Fair grounds 1980, give or take a year. The next concert I remember going to was Poison. My girlfriend at the time convinced me to go with her. I felt poisoned.

Mine was ’87 or ’88: Stryper (opening act: White Lion) at Viking Hall in Bristol, TN. Nothing like dudes in big hair and makeup singing about Jesus.

My first concert was both the most exciting and the most disappointing of my life. As a long-time Jefferson Airplane fan, my friends surprised me with tickets to see the newly reformed Jefferson Starship in 1978.
We ate hash brownies during the two hour drive to Chicago, and suitably mellowed, we settled in for a good time. I don’t even remember the opening act, but I sure remember how shocked I was that the only person I recognized when Starship hit the stage, was Paul Kantner. I had always loved Grace Slick and was appalled that someone named Mickey Hart was pretending unconvincingly to be her.
Although I’m sure there is a YouTube out there of Starship doing Jane, it’s way too early in the morning. Actually it’s always too early for Starship IMNSHO.
Oh yeah, and stay the hell off of my lawn you young whippersnappers!

Mine was Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band at the Asheville Civic Center in ’86 or ’87. My dad took me, my brother, and a friend. Opening act was a fantastic one: The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Good showl.

I want some credit for admitting to seeing Night Ranger up front. That took some guts.

Credit given.
Hey man, I put my Amy Grant out there. That’s got to be worth something, too!

CORRECTION: Just for the record, when I saw Starship it was actually Mickey Thomas not Mickey Hart that was impersonating Grace Slick.
My sincere apologies to Mickey Hart.
DEEP THOUGHT: Perhaps Amy Grant should do a cover of Night Rangers’ Sister Christian.

Peachtree celebration in Rockingham, NC at the speedway in ’72, I was 17.
Rod Stewart (billed as Faces) did not show as scheduled for this event. Alice Cooper did show to fill in. The stage was huge. One band would set up on the left side while another band played on the right. Rory Gallager, Bertha (all female band) Black Oak featuring Jim Dandy, James Gang with Joe Walsh, Three Dog Night, Poco & Fleetwood Mac.
I haven’t been the same since.
