Friday Open Thread: Holiday Weekend

By

Memory - Elihu Vedder - 1870For a lot of folks, it’s just an excuse to drink beer and get onto a boat.

Memorial Day is a United States Federal Holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May (observed in 2008 on May 26). It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to include those who died in any war or military action.

I usually do at least a mini-vaykay over Memorial Day weekend. I guess it’s become the ‘spring Labor Day’ in that it’s a culturally sanctioned sabbath weekend occasionally punctuated with mentions of the origins and purpose of the holiday. What do y’all do? How will you mark / notice / celebrate Memorial Day?

Long nap after work today – ohhh yes.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – definitely. Possibly even more than once.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band @ the Grey Eagle on Saturday – maybe.

I hope to start working on a Schmitt hex trigger-based DIY synthesizer project this weekend as well, depending on whether or not the circuit board arrives today or tomorrow. My theremodem is getting lonely.

And the quest for a copy of Wii Fit continues…

Oh yeah – today would have been the 74th birthday of one of my heroes, Bob Moog. I’m currently celebrating by listening to Switched-On Bach on my iPod.

A little later I might throw on Switched-On Buck (an album of Buck Owens songs performed on a Moog Modular).

Bob Barr For President!

This could swing the state into Obama’s column.

Did you even bother to do the virgin’s blood orgy on Dicksday? I got a memo from headquarters saying it was strictly optional this year…

Adam – my wife managed to find one of the last ones that Amazon.com had in stock this morning. If I see any around I’ll let you know.

Holy crap, Parkside Truthiness is hilarious! Thanks for the link!

Clinton Steps In It:

“My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don’t understand it.”

I’m sorry, I just don’t get holidays. Days are days. Holidays are devised by someone else to encourage the masses to engage in some kind of ritualistic collective sentiment that they feel everyone should appreciate and that is, ultimately, utterly meaningless. Bah.

Toasts I get.

With 15 years service industry experience, memorial day is just another day to me. No disrespect meant to those remembered, but this is another one of those holidays that dosent count for those with crappy jobs.
I like halloween though, and one might find my views on christmas suprisingly complex.
