Carl Says No To Republican Money

By Gordon Smith

Carl Mumpower, dizzy from his surprising win on Tuesday, told the NRCC that they can keep their steenking money:

AC-T: “I got a call from the NRCC (National Republican Congressional Committee) earlier today,” Mumpower said Wednesday afternoon. “And I told them we were not interested in their money. I believe that organization has passively supported our leadership in abandoning their principles, and I have no interest in aligning myself with a self-serving organization.”

Never known as someone who played well with others, Dr. Mumpower just told the Party that he’s supposed to ally with to get things done in Washington that they can (insert metaphor for “Go to hell” here). It’s a smart political move to distance oneself from a Party that’s swirling in the toilet, but it’s not smart to insult everyone you’ll have to work with if you win.

Carl’s principles won’t stop the NRCC from running their own ads here if they want to, of course, but with Carl’s sanctimony facing the million-dollar warchest of Heath Shuler and the dozens of races around the country where Republican incumbents will be lucky to hold onto power, I don’t think the NRCC will be too interested in helping Hot Carl. Army of Mumpower once again goes alone into the breach, everyone else too unprincipled to get an invitation to come along.

Of course, if the stinkerpoos at the NRCC were more interested in defeating Shuler than electing Mumpower (there is a subtle but distinct difference), even Mumpower’s principles couldn’t stand in the way of the NRCC dumping thousands of dollars into negative tv and radio advertising.

I would argue that Shuler isn’t so much distancing himself from his own party as misadvertising which party he actually belongs to. Joe Lieberman with pectorals, so to speak.

Mumpower is turning his back, sort of, on the GOP as currently configured, but is making a smart play to the libertarian wing of the party, which I think is very much in play this cycle — and could be up for grabs for the Democrats in NC-11 if they were running a sharper candidate.

(Ron Paul is trying to do something like this in the upcoming Idaho GOP Presidential Primary).

I don’t care how large Shuler’s war chest is, Mumpower’s outspoken (appearance of) independence likely will resonate with the district more powerfully than Shuler’s mealy Blue Dog triangulation.

Are you sure he turned them down and not the other way around? I mean, they don’t have that much money, these days, do they? What with McHenry’s friend embezzling millions and all . . .
