The Quick’n'Dirty – Shuler’s For Hillary
By
Looks like Army of Mumpower has pulled off an improbable victory against an opponent so lackluster as to be unable to defeat him.
Don Yelton came in third for the Republican Buncombe County Commission race, just ahead of expatriate Ron McKee.
J. Ray Elingburg came out in front of Bob Hill, which is sad. Cecil lost to Bill Stanley by just over a thousand votes. If it weren’t for Republican crossover votes, Stanley couldn’t have taken Bothwell. Will these same Republicans vote for him in the general? We’ll see. Holly Jones owned the County Commission race tonight.
Democrats who won for County Commission: Jones – Bailey – Peterson – Stanley
Republicans: Dunn – Carroll – Yelton – McKee
Jim Neal got creamed by the Hagan in the Senate primary
Goodwin and Wood won for Insurance and Auditor.
Last I looked the Commissioner of Labor race was up for grabs.
Walter Dalton enjoyed the splitski spoils of the progressive candidates, eking out a victory. Score one for the DINOs.
Pat McHenry wasn’t in the kind of freefall we’d imagined. He’ll be around through November. Give money right now to Daniel Johnson.
Oh, and did I mention that Barack Obama kicked Hillary Clinton’s desperate ass 56 – 42? However, he won only one county in the 11th Congressional District, which means that Congressman Heath Shuler will cast his superdelegate vote for Hillary per his announcement yesterday. As of this posting it’s 51-49 in Indiana, with Clinton barely in the lead.
It’s about 36% voter turnout (and 10% of those voted early). What does it take to get folks to vote these days?
I’m thinking some sleep would be good about now. Congratulations and condolences to whomever they correspond. The Asheville Brewing Company was absolutely insane tonight, so thanks for everyone who made it so.
Democrats worked very hard over the last several months, and we registered oodles of new voters. We’re going to romp over John McCain come November.

Republican crossovers? Republicans can’t vote in Democratic primaries in NC.
I would imagine that Bill Stanley will get some Republican votes in November from those Republicans who don’t want to vote for Don Yelton.
I must admit I was (pleasantly) surprised at how well Holly Jones did. I figured she would have problems outside the city and I do suspect that for the November election the CIBO crowd will turn her into the poster child of everything county residents hate about the city — you know, annexation, water rate diferentials, free thinking hippies, etc. But there were those who thought that Patsy Keever was too liberal to get elected county wide and she did it three times — four if you count her carrying Buncombe county in her attempt to unseat Charles Taylor in 2004.
So, could we be looking at a reunion of Holly Jones and Joe Dunn (opps, excuse me DR. Joe Dunn) on County Comission?

RHS,
When I went to vote yesterday I was asked if I wanted a Democratic, Republican or Independent ballot.
Is that just because I’m registered independent?

Don M,
Yes. Unaffiliated get to choose which primary to vote in.
In any case, here’s looking forward to Mumpower’s crushing defeat in November. I actually kind of like the guy (he makes me laugh), but he’s no match for Shuler.
I’m really disappointed in the county commissioner results. Don’t people pay a damn bit of attention to the arrogance of the incumbents?

Bobaloo,
People in the city pay attention, yes. But folks outside the city appear to be more interested in having the devils they know vs. the cityfolk they don’t.

Bobaloo — sure hope you are right about the Mumps being headed for a crushing defeat. Whatever differences I have with Heath Shuler are out the window now that he’ll be running against the sanctimonious blowhard. Given the nature of this district I don’t want to take a defeat for the Mumps for granted.
Can SOMEBODY please explain how John Brooks, who was Commissioner of Labor in 1991 when a fire at a chicken processing plant in Hamlet killed 26 workers (the fire exits had been locked by management to prevent the workers for stealing chickens and the plant had not been inspected by Brooks’ office) managed to finish 2nd in his attempt to regain his seat and appears headed for a runoff? Disturbing.

Re: the turnout @ the Brewing Company last night – I didn’t think it was possible, but there were more people there last night than there were for the 2006 election night throwdown, which was phenomenal in its own right. At one point there were close to 300 people there inside and out. I’ve never seen that place so crowded! Thanks for making last night a huge success, folks.

You could be right Gordon. But does that mean that Holly’s dominance came mostly from city folk who know her or what? I’m confounded.
RHS, yep, Mumpy could be a threat. We’ve seen him move toward the center and even piss off the GOP in an attempt to be a challenger.
None the less, Heath’s got buttloads of cash on hand and a record to tout.
