Election Day Open Thread
ByAbout 390,000 North Carolinians voted early this go ’round. That’s about 10% of registered voters, I believe. Just over 40% of the early voters were African-American, which bodes well for Mr. Obama.
Use this thread to let folks know the scene out there for people who are standing in the voting lines. Fun? Confrontational? Absurd? Packed? Competently staffed? Irregularities?
Be sure to take your handy ScruHoo Voting Guide and let folks know how to vote in the judicial, labor, insurance, and auditor elections.
If you live in the City you can vote for County Commissioners. Go forth, educate, and vote most mightily.
See y’all at the Asheville Brewing Co. tonight at 7pm.

So how was that shower, TP?
For everyone’s convenience, here’s G’s voter suggestions done up in a fancy PDF file to take to the polls. My picks were a bit different (I went with Michael Weisel for Treasurer for the same reason that I didn’t vote incumbent in the County Commissoner’s race, and I voted Ervin for the NC Court of Appeals “Tyson seat”), but there you go. YMMV.

I just spent two hours outside the Fairview/Oakley precinct asking voters to vote for Holly Jones. When I left at 10:30, 220 voters had voted at that precinct. Voters were an interesting mix of older folks and young people with small children–most said they knew going in who they planned to vote for. Three people told me this was the first time they’ve ever voted! One women who’d never voted was in her 60s! Another woman hadn’t registered yet, but she wanted to know if she could register now to vote in November. I told her heck yeah!

I voted early, in Asheville, on a Wednesday afternoon. My polling place was very very quiet.

I had a friend call me early this morning from the Oakley Community Center telling me they turned her away because she was unaffiliated! I’ve reported it to the BOE and Obama’s voter protection hotline, but I’m still angry!
Anyone else heard about irregularities?

My son and I were at precinct 15 this morning handing out info for Holly and Cecil. One of the judges came out to make sure that we were not violating the “no campaigning beyond the marker line”. In all of the elections I have worked, that was a first.

I had no problems (was #343 at 12:30 in Oakley) but my wife was forced to use a provisional ballot as her name had somehow been dropped from the book, even though we have voted at the same place, in every election, for nearly 5 years.

There’s certainly a lot of people waving signs around today. I feel a little sheepish when I try to explain why I can’t vote. How sweet to be an immigrant.

at noon 250 people had voted at st. marks church on chestnut st. the people working were competent and friendly. there was a steady stream of voters in front of and behind me – students, elderly, almost all white. a few people outside were giving ‘progressive’ cheat sheets. very civilized all in all.

jdinaville is a perfect example of an electroate which wont take to 5th grade civics. It’s a PARTY primary, and unaffiliated voters are, by defination, ‘un’ or ‘not’ affilated with a PARTY and thus cannot vote to select a PARTY’S nominees. The only irregularity here is that some one so brain dead 1) they attempt to vote and 2) some one else thinks this is an ‘irregularity.’

Old Fort-
The Baptist church was quiet but signs asking you to trust Jesus were abundant. My wife and I saw two other voters there at 11:00AM. The ladies working the station were nice. As I drove by late this afternoon it looked pretty busy but nothing like a line or anything.
Hope someone blogs this over Pizza and beer tonight.
