What I Like About the West (So Far)

By Drama Queen

Liquor in convenience stores (from Ohio on).

Filet mignon meals delivered for $15 including tip (Douglas, WY)

People who wear real cowboy hats not for promotional purposes, pick-up trucks that get used as pick-up trucks, dogs who obey, houses spaced far apart so that you can have a good argument and no neighbor will hear . . .

But I have no idea what is going on here:

Gorgeous snow covered mountains. Have some nice pics of that this morning back in North carolina.

Your nervous steer is about to give up the family jewels for Rocky Mountain Oysters. They are fried and eaten, a delicacy out west.

Thanks for the pics DQ! I love the West. I could end up living in the SW some day. I could see buying an RV and traveling around – there’s so much to see. I have been visiting there almost every spring for the past 10 years or so – unfortunately not this year though!

One of the best parts of being out in the West is simply renting a car and driving around seeing things like the pics you have posted.

I thought “Rocky Mountain Oysters” were sheep testicles, not steer . . . (I almost said ‘cow’ but that can’t be right!)

Apparently Hustler magazine sponsors this particular event.

being from the “west” it’s funny hearing it described that way. We never do–or at least Californians don’t call ourselves the “west.” We do talk about the North East and the South and the South West and the Mid West, but not the West.

Gianna: I wasn’t even thinking California (or Oregon and Washington).

In Nebraska everyone said we were in the “mid-west” so when we got to Wyoming and Montana (and the scenery and the lack of people) I felt truly in the “wild west.” When I get to Pacific time zone I will definitely not think of it as “west.” More like “West Coast,” I guess.

The strangest thing for me is realizing everyone back “home” has been up for hours even when I get up early. And that you all have gone to bed when I’m ready to socialize!

yes, you’re right, I thought of myself as West Coast….just never used the term west—maybe because there was nothing West of me. Midwest yes…but not west…

bob: that’s what I was wondering. We had a nice chat with a gay antique store owner (vintage clothes) in Butte but that was before we saw County Courthouse Soldier Queen. The local free alternative rag has a cover story on how gay-friendly Montana can be. I guess there’s more than one Brokeback Mountain in the Rockies.

Are you sure you want to know what a testicle festival is about? They eat bull cow testicles…usually with hot sauce. Since I am a vegetarian, that is an easy one for me to pass up. :) I lived in Arizona for a time and like the west.BUT there is no place like WNC and I’m glad to be back.

Another thing about the west, or Arizona anyway. I used to live not far from a business where you could buy all of this in one stop: gasoline, groceries, camping supplies, hard liquor, beer & wine, and a rifle or hand gun,and ammo! It only took about 30 minutes to get cleared to buy the hand gun because of the database online now for gun dealers. I’m not a gun fancier (had my fill of them in the Army), but I must say there are less muggings and robberies in Arizona because the crooks never know who is armed, and a lot of westerners ARE. Responsibly too I must say. It is fairly easy to get a concealed carry permit if you take a course on gun laws and safety and pass a background check. And anyone can carry a rifle or a holstered pistol as long as they are in plain view. Personally, I don’t like to see them displayed, but that’s the way they do things out there. Walmart? Has the cheapest prices on hard liquor. :)

I was amazed out in the Southwest when I saw a whole train – from one end to the other traveling off in the distance.

Here in the hills you never see an entire train, they’re always going around a curve or over a hill.

I’m easily entertained.

Rip I share your awe of the western wide open spaces. Quite different than here.
