Breaking: Cecil Bothwell Running For Buncombe County Commission
By
Cecil Bothwell, named by Mtn. X readers as the best journalist in western North Carolina, plans Monday to file as a candidate in the Buncombe County Commission race. Bothwell has a storied history in Buncombe County working against entrenched, corrupt interests. His investigation into Bobby Medford’s illegal gambling and racketeering operation initiated the federal probe that put Medford behind bars.
Cecil knows just about everybody in the county, and they know him. His name recognition will be high, and his integrity is unquestionable. He is the editor of the newly minted Asheville City Paper, founding member of the Asheville Buncombe Policy Institute, and BlogAsheville blogger.
His website will be up soon, and the official announcement is coming on Monday. Our slate of candidates now includes:
Democrats
Cecil Bothwell
Holly Jones
Keith Thomson
K. Ray Bailey
Vernon Dover
Bill Stanley
Carol Peterson
David Gantt (running for Chair)
Republicans
Mike Fryar (father of ScruHoo’s favorite shill, Christy Fryar)
Nathan Ramsey (running for Chair)
Rumored potential candidate for the Republicans:
Don Yelton (No, really)
What are your thoughts, Hooligans?

Cecil said he website will be up shortly, and you can donate there.
Interestingly, Christy Fryar, in introducing her father over at the AC-T comment boards deliberately avoided naming his political party, and then later in the thread Richard Bernier claims that naming someone else’s political party is mudslinging.
Sounds like Mr. Fryar might be running away from being noticed as a Republican. We’ll have to help since it’s a partisan election and all.
Here’s video of Mike and Christy Fryar. Mike says he’s running on:
1. Repealing zoning
2. Wanting to understand why the county couldn’t back off their taxes
3. Try to get along
4. Wanting a 7-member commission “because 3-2 votes is not really representing”
“This is the people’s county. It’s not a party’s county.” My favorite part of the video is when they put his personal cellphone number up on the screen for folks to call. I’m not putting it here, you Hooligans.
Fryar, it appears, is going to run away from his party affiliation. I mean, it’s cool that he wants to talk to people he doesn’t agree with. But it’s not cool during a partisan race to dodge calling yourself a Republican. If you are, then you are.
Very exciting.

Its interesting that Elaine felt the need to bold the word TRUE. Elaine, are there some FAUX progressives running that I am not aware of?

I’m thinking that, for some reason, it bugs me that a journalist is running for office.

Good point David. What is up with Lite. She ran for council saying the same BS about herself. Who died and made her the judge of what a “True Progressive” is. Don’t get me wrong. I like Bothwell and will vote him, but this sort of crap from Lite is the reason why she lost and cost Asheville a progressive majority on city council.

Cecil’s integrity is unquestionable? He is not at MountainX for a reason. You guess why.

This is a good news . I am getting tired of the same boring and non-innovative runners . There is not a commisionner that i fully trust in fact . Somewhere being elected equal to always have a reserve attitude and prudence toward the media and the people , then they become instruments of their ponderence . A brain that could be wise, smart and made of innovative thinking (To reflect or consider with thoroughness and care ) somewhat transform into a FAUX, BS and inaction .
What the party is afraid is populism (yelton-nesbitt-etc ) but with Cecil they will be afraid of intelligence .

The only thing that cost Asheville a progressive majority on city council was Brownie Newman and his silly vote thing.
I don’t understand the animosity towards Elaine or Bryan. IMHO, it is misplaced.
Save it for Brownie. And Jan. And Bill.

Just to clarify, it was completely unintentional on my part leaving out my father’s political affiliation. He IS a Republican and he is very proud of it. He is not trying to avoid anything or separate himself from the party. It was an oversight on my part…
