One Less Superdelegate
ByIt looks like “Joementum” is now defined as “the quantity of motion of Joe Lieberman, equal to the product of its mass and its velocity, starting with the moment that his name was scratched from the list of superdelegates”.
Thanks to Zell Miller, there is a rule to deal with Joe Lieberman.
Lieberman’s endorsement of Republican John McCain disqualifies him as a super-delegate to the Democratic National Convention under what is informally known as the Zell Miller rule, according to Democratic State Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo.
Miller, then a Democratic senator from Georgia, not only endorsed Republican George Bush four years ago, but he delivered a vitriolic attack on Democrat John Kerry at the Republican National Convention.
The Democrats responded with a rule disqualifying any Democrat who crosses the aisle from being a super delegate. Lieberman will not be replaced, DiNardo said.
You can rest assured that Holy Joe will still be a superdelegate to the Connecticut for Lieberman National Convention. Take that, Democrats!
Thanks to Zell Miller, there is a rule to deal with Joe Lieberman.

That’s awesome, now if they would just strip his committee chairmanships…

While we’re on the subject of superdelegates, Obama currently leads Clinton in superdelegates from North Carolina, 2 to 1. That’s 2 s-d’s for Obama, and 1 for Clinton, out of NC’s 17 total.
Obama has received the support of one DNC member and Congressman G.K. Butterfield.
Clinton has the support of one DNC member.
That’s according to these folks.

The Kentucky Democrat has posted a list of all the superdelegates. ALL of them. At the bottom of the KYDEM post are two links – one to Hillary’s Superdelegates and one to Obama’s.

This is payback for Hillary‘s support of Joe Republican against the Connecticut Dem’s candidate Ned Lamont in 2006.
When Hillary turned against her own party she showed Joe that party ties are irrelevant when all you really want is power. Funny, actually, that Lieberman still had superdelegate status when he bolted the party to run as an Indy against Lamont. But, had he been admitted he would doubtless have supported Hillary, and it would serve her oh so right if Lamont got the superdelegate slot instead.
Would love that.

What I can’t figure is why Joe had superdelegate status to begin with. Didn’t he leave the Democratic Party and form the CFL party? It’s not like he’s changed his status since the election, so he’s still not a Democrat, but an independent. How he gets any privileges from being a Democratic elected official is beyond me.

Yeah, it does seem odd that he would still hold the superdelegate. He gets the privileges simply from his seniority and it would make the Dems look spiteful if they removed him from committees. Plus, he’s technically an “Independent Democrat”.
Still, it never ceases to amaze me the amount of vitriol the man gets for defending his Senate seat. Hell, I like him for simply not rolling over for Lamont and Kos.

The vitriol he gets is not for “defending his seat”. It’s for jettisoning the Democratic Party when he lost a primary. He doesn’t have any loyalty to the Party, so why should the Party be giving him anything? He needs to be jettisoned from the Democratic Caucus as well.
He’s not a Democrat. He’s a Connecticut For Lieberman.

That was me up above by the way.
I know this is territory we’ve been over before, but let’s be fair. The Democratic party jettisoned him first and he’s listed as an “Independent Democrat”, whatever that means. Though I certainly can understand the disdain for him now that he’s endorsed McCain, so your (Progressives) dislike for him is warranted.
But again, I’ll agree to disagree on his importance to the Democrats.

He ran in a Democratic Party primary to “defend his seat”. He lost that primary. Rather than adhere to the wishes of the Party he claimed to be a part of, he jumped ship, created Connecticut For Lieberman, beat Lamont fair and square, then laid claim to a right to caucus with Democrats. How disingenuous and cynical is that?
Lieberman’s hawkish stances distanced him from the leadership of the Democratic Party, but it was the voters who said they wanted something different. Rather than remaining a Democrat, he chose to be “independent” while continuing to demand the perks of being a Party man. I’m glad to see him losing his superdelegate status. If he kept it, it would be like having McCain have a Democratic party superdelegate.

albatross:
2. a seemingly inescapable moral or emotional burden, as of guilt or responsibility.
3. something burdensome that impedes action or progress.
Hillary has gleefully worn him around her neck for a long time.
