Recount
ByFrom a report by Leslee Kulba, left as a comment at Mtn. X blogs by Tim Peck:
“Prior to the meeting, Bryan Freeborn, who was defeated by Russell in the city council race by 84 votes, told Russell in a voice loud enough to for all present to hear that he would be asking for a recount. Freeborn explained this was not out of any sense of entitlement, but that from a responsible viewpoint, he’s been looking for an opportunity to test the system. Further, 200 provisional ballots had not yet been counted. When Russell said he would be out of town on a family vacation and unable to do anything about it, Freeborn instructed him to sign a letter initiating the recount.”

Oh TP, stop it. So many people were saying “Let Asheville Vote!”, but now you don’t want the votes recounted to ensure accuracy? It makes it clear that vote counting is something Republicans don’t want Democrats to do.

Freeborn will likely lose by a greater margin once the votes are recounted.

I kinda liked the freGore comment too, A.
In the 90s I used to laugh at Rush Limbaugh’s Clinton parodies so I’m just sick that way.

So I’m a stick in the mud about the FreGore comment? Huh. I’d better loosen up.

I didn’t think it was all that funny, and I always enjoy a good chuckle at someone else’s expense.

Very interesting. I have grown to know Bryan Freeborn. He is a thoughtful man who has done some good for Asheville. I wish him well in the recount.

I just got off the phone with Bryan. He cannot request a recount until the vote is certified on Tuesday. Then he will have until Wednesday at 5 pm to make a decision. He leaning towards asking for a recount but will wait and see what the final tally is before he makes a decision.
One factor that is on his mind is that these machines are relatively untested.

It’s close enough that we ought to double-check the results.

I had a long conversation with Freeborn on Thursday about the results and his plans. He seemed extremely upbeat and focused about his plans going forward. I asked him about the recount and he replied that he was only interested in testing the machines and did not think that a recount would overturn the tuesday results. He also mentioned that he had being getting a lot of requests from supporters to ask for a recount.
I also asked him about the idea of stepping in to fill Holly’s seat if she was elected to the county commission. He told me that he only took the appointment to city council because he felt obligated to his supporters. He would not take such an appointment again. He also indicated that the cost of winning a seat to city council is more than he was willing to raise and did not seem interested in running again.
There will be negative press for him if he does ask for a recount and I am sure that will play in his decision. However, when has Freeborn ever cared about the press. I have always know him to care about the issues, the people, and doing what is right.
The one time I think he tried to play the political game and did not follow his heart was on the partisan election issue.
I do not think that he really wanted to make the call one way or another. He took a big risk on that vote and Holly Jones, Brownie Newman, and Robin Cape really left to hang in the wind as he ran for office this year. I think their luke warm support of him, especially by Holly, cost him a win. But what should progressives have expected from Holly and Brownie. Their support for the unimpressive candidate Chris Pelly is the reason Mumpower re-elected.
