Open Thread: Hooligans Heart Asheville
ByIt’s been wonderful having so many intelligent, informed, impassioned people over here this week for the high drama of the City Council election. All of us here at Scrutiny Hooligans feel grateful that this conversation is happening here.
What’s going on aside from expensive gas, Shuler’s issues, and the Freecount?

I thought it was pretty cool that tiny little ol’ Gardner-Webb U. beat the doo-doo outta Kentucky at Kentucky in basketball last night.
Slaying giants seems to be a common theme as of late in Western NC – let’s hope the momentum carries on into the ’08 political circus.

This is a significant development. The dollar is in free-fall, oil is through the roof, the housing bubble is bursting, hyper-inflation is around the corner and a hard recession is being predicted by insiders.
The Fed chairman testified before Congress today and attempted to obfuscate, calm fears and generally dodge the hard questions.
At least one committee member was not amused.
Bottom line: The Fed is, once again, put in the position of having to fix the problem they created by further manipulating the money supply and interest rates.
(Note: If you watched the testimony today you’ll know that Bernanke floated the idea of having the Federal Government (you and me) cover the credit risk of beleaguered and over-extended national banks.)

If Pakistan had significant oil would we be sending troops to help quell the unrest? Their nukes are the ones we should be concerned about.

rip,
Our alliance of convenience with Pakistan evidences the same disturbing pattern of supporting dictators, fueling arms races, and looking the other way that have been hallmarks of American foreign policy since Korea.
In July, 2006I wrote about Pakistan’s nuclear proliferation. Here’s a little excerpt:

Tim, I think we should consider ourselves lucky if all we experience is a “hard recession”.

Lesson Learned
I thought that running well-organized campaigns would be enough to further the progressive movement. I now realize that that is not true. We must better articulate the issues year-round or find ourselves at a constant disadvantage at the polls.
We have city council meetings on cableTV, but each member only gets a few minutes to debate any issue. The papers only print snippets of any debate. A couple of city council members post full explanations of their viewpoints in their newsletters, but it’s not enough to move the progressive agenda.
We progressives do a pretty good job of getting our message out when we are on the defensive, like fighting a Wal-Mart, but not when it comes to proactive measures like supporting renewable fuels.
Any suggestions as to how to get out message out on issues on a year-round basis?

I’ve found that a blog can do that…
Also groups like Drinking Liberally, DFA, Veterans for Peace, and the Democratic Party exist already. Showing up to these groups and spreading the word helps. Writing a letter to the editor a month also helps. Encouraging others to do the same also helps. WPVM helps. We could use a daily local liberal political show as a counterpoint to the right-leaning Mittan. Errington Thompson has a good show on national politics on 880AM on Saturday mornings, but we don’t have a daily local analog.
There’s no silver bullets. It’s just continuous organizing and occasionally seizing opportunities as they arise.

John,
Funny you mention that. While drinking beers with Brownie the other night, I burped out the idea of Bryan having a weekly URTV show.
Maybe we need a ‘draft Bryan for media’ campaign.

Gordon,
I guess I’m thinking more along the lines of a coutnerpoint to the Matt Satan show. We have all these separate little groups that are made up of essentially the same 200 people. So if our progressive leaders want to push an agenda, say green building technology, they have to go to a dozen meetings to reach people that are on board anyway.
WeI gotta remember that most people just aren’t hard core political junkies. We’ve done a great job of learning how to run campaigns andweyou are kicking ass on the blogoshpere. But we are completely absent in mass media. That’s our missing piece.Rate this comment:

sounds like corporate welfare is alive and acceptable to Republicans and Democrats alike, but giving money to poor children so they can have health coverage, well hell no that’s an entitlement program it needs to be not funded – or social security etc.
I want my government back – anybody have any bright ideas????????

I just clicked on Twain’s link. Looks like we are not going to be ‘completely absent’ in the mass media dept. Warped minds think alike. If you skipped it you should read this. http://bothwellsblog.wordpress.com/ It is very very good news.
