He called himself “Me”
ByJust another street drummer dude but he was fun. Outside the Verizon Center, across from the Smithsonian’s combined National Portrait Gallery/American Museum of Art. We had a nice dinner in DC’s two-block Chinatown.

I remember having to run an errand near the Federal Center Metro, and there was a guy standing near the escalators with a tenor sax playing a reasonable version of Coltrane’s version of “My Favorite Things”. As a general rule, I always toss whatever change I have in my pocket into their instrument case if they’re playing Coltrane.
A couple of weeks later, I got off the Metro at the same location and not only was the same guy from before playing “My Favorite Things”, but there was a trumpeter across the street playing “Giant Steps” and another person playing “Blue Train” about a block away. Word got out fast, I guess.
I miss DC street musicians.

Yeah. It’s pretty much fun just to explore with no agenda. I’ve had Ethiopian food on eclectic U-street (much less white-bread than the crowd you see in this vid). I’ve had Salvadorian food at my neighborhood pupuseria. I’ve had great (and cheap) polish sausage and gumbo at the Rosecroft harness racing track. And a little Thai restaurant on P street down from Dupont Circle has won my loyalty particularly in the price v. food quality department but also because of their street-side patio. And don’t get me started on all the great Indian food.
Plus, even the heat doesn’t bother me too much anymore. I must be becoming a city-lover.

U Street. You’ve got me missing Ben’s Chili Bowl, DQ!
There was a KILLER Thai place in Cleveland Park when I lived there. Can’t remember the name of it.

Cleveland Park? I’ve heard there’s a great Mediterranean place on Calvert where Helen Thomas has something named after her. I’ll have to check it out. We’ve been to the zoo after work on a rainy day but we’re so beat afterwards we had to stop at the closest spot ** gasp ** a Starbucks. We haven’t hardly looked at any of the restaurants clustered around the metro stop. But we will.
Oh, I forgot to mention this awesome Argentinian place across from the soon-to-be Target at Columbia Heights, 13th St. It’s got a bigger version in Adams Morgan but they have amazing appetizers half price weekdays from 5-7 and they’re on our metro line . . . can you say meet after work?
The food definitely makes it worth the move . . . well, the peeps in general are pretty fun, too. Humidity and bizarre youth intern snot culture . . . not so fun.

My brother lives up on Capitol Hill and whenever I am up there he takes me to some great ethnic resturants in that area plus the Eastern Market is up there.

Another thing I miss about DC – fried chicken w/mumbo sauce.
