The White House announced that this bill was going to be vetoed because:
State and local criminal laws already provide criminal penalties for the violence addressed by the new Federal crime defined in section 7 of H.R. 1592, and many of these laws carry stricter penalties (including mandatory minimums and the death penalty) than the proposed language in H.R. 1592….. There has been no persuasive demonstration of any need to federalize such a potentially large range of violent crime enforcement, and doing so is inconsistent with the proper allocation of criminal enforcement responsibilities between the different levels of government.
Basically, what the White House is saying is, “The Preznint is going to veto this bill because it infringes on the rights of anti-gay bigots to spew their propaganda and say screamingly ignorant, hypocritical bullshit.”
Call me overreactionary, but if this sort of legislative behavior continues, the only thing in my mind that will separate Congressman Shuler from folks like Fred Phelps is the fact that Shuler wears better suits.

Who says they’re not a “big tent” party? Look at all those different ties!
How refreshing to see some real choices.

What’s with Shuler voting for excluding gays from the hate crimes bill? I go away for a week and he turns to the dark side?

I’m going to have to agree with Trex @ Firedoglake on this one:

There is at least a diversity of opinion. Three of the ten don’t believe in Evolution.
