Background on this story here, here, here, here, here, here.

Hendersonville Times-News: “Mental health care leaders in the mountains are calling for the dismissal of North Carolina’s top health official on the grounds of mismanagement.”
[…]
“This cut was done without any consultation with providers, LMEs, counties, CFAC (Consumer and Family Advisory Council), advocates and hospitals, the very ones that supply the essential mental health services in our communities,” [Jason] Chappell wrote.
[…]
“Chappell asked residents to “request that the rates are re-instated and action be taken to place competent people in charge of mental health in the state.”

Secretary Carmen Hooker Odom, who serves at the pleasure of Governor Easley, and her lackeys, Mike Moseley and Mark Benton, are busy decimating our mental health system. While immense public pressure forced them to back away from their impulsive, retroactive cuts, they still plan to move forward with slashing funding, and they aren’t about to admit they’ve done anything wrong.

“It’s not an admission we were wrong in making the cut retroactive,” Mark Benton, the state’s senior deputy director of Medicaid, said Thursday, “but we understand this is difficult for some providers.” – LINK

The problem is that they have done something wrong.

Winston-Salem Journal: “Triumph LLC, a large mental-health services provider, said yesterday that it will shut down services in Iredell, Surry and Yadkin counties because Medicaid cuts have made it tough to continue. The shutdown, which could happen by the end of June, will affect about 2,000 patients in those counties, said Paul Caldwell, Triumph’s chief operating officer.

Triumph, based in Morrisville, provides services for 13,800 customers, including Forsyth County. About 90 employees will be laid off when Triumph pulls out of those counties, he said.”

And in Waynesville:

AC-T: “Marsha Hammond of Direct Care LLC in Waynesville says the entire mental health system has been mismanaged by the state and is calling for the resignations of Carmen Hooker Odom, N.C. Department of Health and Human Services secretary, and Michael Moseley, head of the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services.

“The provider companies were just getting on their feet, and now a lot of us are talking about closing, and it’s all because of mismanagement,” she said. “This is not the fault of the providers. Most of us have been doing what we thought was right. We got little or no training or direction from the state, and now they’ve cut us off at the knees.”

Please write today to call for the reinstatement of the Community Support rates and for the firing/resignation of the impulsive, capricious Secretary Carmen Hooker Odom.
