The Tarheel Tavern #107: Count Me In
By
(It’s Monday Morning. The Tavern’s a day late. Just one, only one, not too late, and here it comes…)
Though I don’t know why it’s there
When numbers get serious
You see their shape everywhere
Dividing and multiplying
Exchanging with ease
When times are mysterious
Serious numbers are easy to please
- Paul Simon
After I caught 300 down at the local googolplex, 11.5% alcohol beer swimming around my 7 1/4 sized noggin, I settled into a study of the arcane art of numerology. St. Augustine of Hippo (A.D. 354 – 430) wrote, “Numbers are the Universal language offered by the deity to humans as confirmation of the truth.” Once humans get to chatting about Truth, you know there’s going to be trouble. I gave up the effort once the Chaldeans, Pythagoreans, Cantonese and Kabbalists got to arguing over 9s, and instead I turned to the wisdom of our North Carolina blogosphere, our perfect circle.
Rather than write anything, I considered simply republishing, in full, the always excellent scribblings of Anonymoses Hyperlincoln. Here are the fair use excerpts, but you’ll do yourself a favor to simply click over then come back.
“I eat numbers for breakfast. Well, brunch. They suck. I wouldn’t try it.
Instead run out and git yoreself a gol-dern numerologist. You know, a number specialist, as His Homeliness might say.”
[...]
“At times I wax the borderline acalculiac, a numbskull atavistic throwback hangers-on I’d just as soon discard. Perhaps by uttering my few examples, the jesus of numbers will climb the cross once more, sacrifice, like soldiers, for my financial well-being.”
Here at Scrutiny Hooligans, WNCNN is back. Anchorman Johnny Joe Rockslide interviews Senator Elizabeth Dole about her 118.91 acres in Johnson City, Kansas and her newly adopted address, “712 S Fulton St, Salisbury, NC”.
Sticking with the numbers in politics theme, View From The Cheap Seats brings us a two-part analysis of Article V, Section 14 of the NC Constitution. In “Full Faith and Credit” He ranges from Ben Franklin’s 1787 to NC Gubernatorial race of 2008. Part One Part Two
From the minutiae of tax law and political maneuverings comes an inspiring tale. Bull City Bully Pulpit testifies and advocates for strength in numbers in his announcement of the Bull City Headquarters Grand Opening, “Our mission is to create an opportunity to bring together neighborhoods through events such as public lectures, lending libraries, and workshops; Foster creative expression including but not limited to performance and visual arts, musical events, and gallery exhibitions; Offer public service through an organized meeting space, a bike co-op, and a resource center.”
Billy the Blogging Poet turns numbers into dollars in “One Thousand Percent Profit”. Below is the first stanza. Find the rest here.
with the elves there on my street
when a strange old man walking on tin cans
stopped to rest his weary feet.
Said, “I don’t know you but I swear it’s true
if you lend me just ten bills
I’ll pay you back a thousand times
when I come down from those hills.”
Writing For Nonprofits turns the numerological calendar’s endless symbolism on its head, arguing instead for an entirely practical use: “An editorial calendar can also help you stay focused on your audience and your goals for publication”.
Coturnix, our Tarheel Tavern Blogfather, tells the tale of 5 days, 16 years ago, when 100,000 people gathered in the center of Belgrade. It’s a cynical, savvy, inspriational tale of how the world works.
And to close this numbery Tarheel Tavern, an allegory from My Blue Puzzle Piece:
“Did you just say, “3 + 1 = 4?”
Yes, I
That’s all wrong! 4 = 1 + 3 !
No, it’s 3+1.
1+3!
3+1!”
We don’t yet have a host for next week’s Tarheel Tavern. The Tavern is on the verge of leaping into another realm of participation, but it needs your help to spread the word. Get your bloggy buddies on the mailing list and be sure to advertise the Tavern at submission time and publishing time. Please volunteer to host, and I’ll see you next week.

Yo Scrutiny Hooligans!
It’s Chris (Bad Ass?) (at school). Just wondering about your involvement in the 2008 Presidential Election and how it will be broadcasted on the blog.
Also, WNC Grassroots Campaign for Barack Obama will be having a fundraiser dinner on Wednesday, March 28th. It will be from 6:00 to 9:00 in the evening.
I believe there will be a raffle. But for sure wine, and H’or dourves.
Tickets are:
$25 in advance
$35 at door (if you don’t already have tickets)
$10 for students (UNCA, AB Tech, or High School)
Just letting you know. Flyers are all over Asheville and you can check out more on http://www.WNCObama.com (it’s makeshift but soon it will be better)
